3 Fundamentals of Writing a Book

1.    Mindset

Your mindset is vital to writing. You must be inspired and determined. These two things will keep you plodding along when the going gets tough.

What’s Your Inspiration?

Your inspiration is vital if you’re going to keep writing. You will not keep going when the going gets tough if your inspiration is not strong enough. It will fizzle out. So the question is, what is your inspiration? Have you ever really asked yourself this question? It’s vital that you discover this and establish it.

If your Inspiration was set by someone else, if you are writing merely because someone else said you should, you must find a different inspiration. Perhaps you might write for yourself, to make yourself happy or fulfill a need. Maybe you can write for your children or for all the children of the world in the name of the child you wanted so badly. Then again, perhaps you could write in the name of a loved one who passed on to Heaven. There are so many reasons to write! Find your inspiration!

Be Determined.

Are you determined to keep on keeping on? Will you keep going and keep writing despite the circumstances? Or will you allow life to set your book on the backburner? Are you determined? Don’t tell me you’ll try. Don’t tell me you’ll do your best. Tell me you will. You either will or you won’t. In the infamous words of Yoda, “Do or do not. There is no try.” Your mindset can make a difference in failure or success!

2.    Strategy and Planning

There are several aspects to strategy and planning when it comes to writing a successful book. The first aspect is choosing your readership.

Choosing Your Readership

Sit down and ask yourself these questions:

  • How old is your target readership?
  • What is the education level of your target readership?
  • What is the income level of your target readership?
  • Do they have children?
  • Are they male or female?
  • What is their current employment?
  • What do they like to do for fun?

The more niche you can get with your target audience, the more you can speak directly to them. You want to speak to one person when you write, and you want that one person to be your target audience. You want your reader to feel like you’re speaking directly to them. Choose your readership carefully!

Choose Your Bestselling Topic

There is more that goes into choosing a bestselling topic than just choosing a topic you like to write on, though that is one thing you should consider.

Firstly, make a list of topics you enjoy, things you know a lot about, and topics you have a lot of experience with. These topics will be simple for you to write on. You won’t have to do as much research for them. It will be easy for you to come up with stories and illustrations if it’s a topic you know a lot about or have experience with. When it’s a topic you enjoy, you’re not likely to give up halfway through.

Mind Mapping and Outlining

Mind mapping your book is vital to making it successful. You must know where you are going with it from the beginning before you can begin.

A mind map is simple. You merely write your ideas about your topic on a piece of paper and let them flow from topic to topic. Write your main topic in the center of the paper. Write everything you can about that topic. Next, write everything that comes to mind about one of the topics that came from the main topic. Choose another and do the same. You can continue to branch out from each topic and subtopic until you run out of ideas! You, then, group your like topics together and create your outline. Easy-peasy!

3.    Action

Next, you must take action on your book. Action is vital. If you have the mindset to do the work and make a plan to implement it but never take action, not only will you never succeed on your dreams, but you’ll regret it for the rest of your life!

There are a few possible ways to go about writing a successful nonfiction book.
